Age-Adjusted Hospitalization Rate due to Alcohol Use

County: Clark
Measurement Period: 2013-2015
This indicator shows the age-adjusted hospitalization rate due to acute or chronic alcohol abuse per 10,000 population aged 18 years and older. "Alcohol abuse" includes alcohol dependence syndrome, nondependent alcohol abuse, alcoholic psychoses, toxic effects of alcohol, and excessive blood level of alcohol. It does not include diseases of the nervous system, digestive system, and circulatory system caused by alcohol.

Why is this important?

Drinking alcohol has immediate effects that can increase the risk of many harmful health conditions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, excessive alcohol use, either in the form of heavy drinking (drinking more than 15 drinks per week on average for men or more than 8 drinks per week on average for women), or binge drinking (drinking more than 5 drinks during a single occasion for men or more than 4 drinks during a single occasion for women), can lead to increased risk of health problems such as liver disease or unintentional injuries. There are approximately 88,000 deaths attributable to excessive alcohol use each year in the United States (CDC). Additionally, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependencies cites excessive alcohol use as the 3rd leading lifestyle-related cause of death for the nation.

Technical note: Rates were calculated using population figures from the 2010 U.S. Census. Rates based on fewer than 10 hospitalizations or a population of less than 300 are unstable and are not reported. In October 2015, health care facilities began using International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10) for diagnosis and procedure coding of admissions and visits. Due to the increased specificity for diagnosis and procedure codes with ICD-10, please use caution when comparing prior time periods.
