This indicator shows the percent of public school students in grades 9-12 who attended physical education classes on 5 days in an average week when they were in school.

Why is this important?

Schools play a critical role in promoting the health and safety of young people and helping them establish lifelong healthy behaviors. Research also has shown that school health programs, including physical education, can reduce the prevalence of health risk behaviors among young people and have a positive effect on academic performance.  Additionally, regular physical activity among adolescents helps improve bone health, body weight and composition, physical fitness and mental health.  Lastly, active adolescents are more likely to become active adults.
