Teens Who Currently Smoke Cigars

Measurement Period: 2017
Percentage of youth who currently smoke cigars (cigars, cigarillos, or little cigars on at least 1 day during the 30 days before the survey). This was removed in the 2019 YRBS, not sure when the question first appeared. (YRBS)

Why is this important?

Factors associated with youth tobacco product use include the following:

  • Social and physical environments
  • The way mass media show tobacco product use as a normal activity can make young people want to try these products.
  • Youth are more likely to use tobacco products if they see people their age using these products. (CDC, 2022)
Use of other tobacco products (cigars, smokeless tobacco, and/or pipes) by current cigarette smokers increased from 10.2% in 2000 to 14.5% in 2017. (DHHS, 2020)
