Age-Adjusted Rate of Emergency Department Visits due to Heat-Related Illness

Measurement Period: 2017
This indicator shows the age-adjusted rate of emergency department visits per 10,000 population due to heat-related illness.

Why is this important?

Extreme heat can affect anyone, but certain people are more at risk, including those who are 65 years or older, young children, and people who work or exercise outdoors, live in low-income households, are experiencing homelessness, or have chronic medical conditions. Heat-related illnesses are preventable. Simple precautions that allow people to enjoy summer activities while staying safe and healthy include planning outdoor activities during early morning and evening hours, wearing appropriate clothing, drinking plenty of water, avoiding sugary or alcoholic beverages, and checking on older neighbors and loved ones.
